Inspired by The Veiled Vestal by Italian sculptor Raffaelle Monti. Monti’s marble sculpture was completed in the 1840s for the Duke of Devonshire and is now associated with Chatsworth House, where it appeared in the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice during Elizabeth Bennet’s visit to Pemberley. The sculpture is celebrated for its astonishing illusion of a translucent veil carved from solid marble, a detail I wanted to reinterpret through the softness, shadow, and delicacy of graphite.
